What Is Sea Moss, The Benefits, And How To Use It

 Sea Moss is used to describe different algae species. There are thousands of species of sea moss and it is one of the most powerful superfoods in the ocean. Genus Gracilaria, Chrondus Crispus, and Kappaphycus alvarezii are the most common ones on the market today. Ireland, Scotland, and jamaica have used sea moss for generations in food and as folk medicine. All species of sea moss come in a variety of colors.

A gelatinous carbohydrate extracted from Sea moss, known as Carrageenan are used in baked goods and cosmetics. You can also eat it on its own and use to thicken soups and stews. Before we get into the health benefits of this vital seaweed let’s go a little deeper into the different types of species.

Irish Moss known as Chondrus crispus is a red algae seaweed found on the shores of the North Atlantic surrounding Ireland, Europe, and North America.

Genus Gracilaria grows in warmer water most popular in Jamaica and st. Lucia The color is typically a yellow gold color but can vary. That’s normal because nature itself intends to vary. This species of Sea Moss grows all year around.

Kappaphycus Alvarezii is one of the most important commercial sources of carrageenans, this algae can be green or yellowish in color. The demand of carrageenan from industries increased rapidly in many countries particularly in southeast asia. It looks very similar to the genus Gracilaria.
